Toyota GR86 Review – Sports Car Perfection?

Launched just over a year ago, the Toyota GR86 completed the ‘power of three’ lineup of GR models, joining the GR Yaris and GR Supra. The GR86 was an instant sales sensation, selling out in less than two hours.

GR86

The Perfect Sports Car Recipe

The Toyota GR86 is a rare analogue car in a digital age, designed for pure driving pleasure. The ingredients contributing to this raw feeling sports car include a naturally aspirated yet powerful 2.4l Boxer engine at the front, power to the rear wheels and a lightweight, balanced chassis.

Add to this a 60% increase in body rigidity and the use of more aluminium to save weight, a 10mm lower ride height and a 5mm longer wheelbase and you're presented with a better handling and more stable sports car.

The GR86 is available with a manual or automatic gearbox, however the manual fitted to our car completed the analogue experience, in which you have to work with the car to master gear changes which provides a rewarding drive.

Toyota GR86 Styling

Toyota GR86 is an evolution of Toyota GT86, but with sharper and simpler lines which command attention of the head turning, perfect proportions of this sports coupe. The front air dams and air breather vents create outstanding front-end road holding whilst the wide rear track ensures the GR86 can put its power down. The functional air vents, muscular wheel arches, ‘duckbill’ rear spoiler and large twin exhausts all hint at the performance on offer and encourage you to get behind the wheel and drive.

The configuration of the Toyota GR86 engine allows the GR86 to have a lower bonnet line and therefore the whole car is much lower than you expect which not only adds to the sporty looks but also lowers the centre of gravity and the position of the seats to give an even better driving experience.

Toyota GR86 Engine

The Toyota GR86 has a naturally aspirated Boxer engine meaning the cylinders are horizontally opposed to make the engine flatter.

The engine has had a complete overhaul since featuring in the GT86, firstly being bored out to increase capacity from 2.0l to 2.4l, whilst maintaining the same weight and dimensions. There is also upgraded fuel injection, manifold and cooling. Steps have been taken to ensure the increased performance doesn’t have a negative impact on durability; likewise, heat treatment from the increased exhaust volume has been carefully managed.

The engine is sublime, making all sorts of interesting sounds as you progress through the rev range, which hints at the car's motorsport heritage. It produces 231hp and 184lb ft torque, which begs to be driven hard as peak power is at 7,000rpm and peak torque is at 3,500rpm.

Toyota GR86 Behind The Wheel

The steering is responsive, full of feel and perfectly weighted so it feels like every input you make is directly translating to the position of the car on the road. The GR86 handles beautifully with little body roll and a low centre of gravity. Because of this the GR86 has a perfect balance between being responsive and being predictable, giving you confidence to push it harder. If you want to kick out the rear end you can but thanks to different levels of traction control, it always feels safe and controllable.

The manual gearbox fitted to our car has a short, slick and satisfying change, and feels so good you look forward to making every change. You have to work with the clutch and engine to achieve smooth changes which makes the drive more rewarding.

Put simply, this is a car you look forward to driving, you take the longer way home and get up earlier to just to go for a drive before your day starts. For a sports car there is not better compliment.

Toyota GR86 Interior

Just like the exterior, the interior is designed to be functional and add to the driving experience, ensuring all controls are easy to reach and don’t get in the way of enjoying the drive. There are nice touches throughout which makes the interior feel more special such as Ultrasuede™ trim, aluminium pedals and the leather on the steering wheel and gearshift.

The heated front sports seats are a highlight of the interior, as they are comfortable and supportive with a smart combination of Ultrasuede™ and leather.

The digital instrument display has a retro feel and displays all the information you need; speed, revs, engine temperature and fuel, to the left is a multi-function display. In the centre of the car is a useful touchscreen which supports smartphone mirroring for navigation.

There are compact rear seats and a 226l boot. With the seats folded down there is enough space to carry four wheels for track days– which hints at what many customers will do with their GR86.
