My Steven Eagell Apprenticeship: Kaitlin, Apprentice Payroll Assistant

My Steven Eagell Apprenticeship:

Kaitlin, Apprentice Payroll Assistant

We are excited to be supporting National Apprenticeship Week 2024, an initiative that aims to shine a light on the positive impact that apprenticeships make to individuals, businesses and the wider economy.

Throughout National Apprenticeship Week, we are sharing a different Q&A with a current or former Steven Eagell Group apprentice on our blog and social media, showcasing the many benefits apprenticeships offer employers and individuals. Each success story will feature participants sharing insights into their experience of completing an apprenticeship.

Today we’re talking to Kaitlin Welding. Kaitlin started an apprenticeship as a Payroll Assistant in June 2023 and is based at our Milton Keynes head office.

Why did you apply for an apprenticeship at Steven Eagell Group?

I was looking to gain a new qualification alongside developing my skills and knowledge, which is why I decided to do an apprenticeship. From the research I did into Steven Eagell Group, it looked like a perfect place to develop my career.

How did you find your apprenticeship and what did the interview process involve?

The apprenticeship at Steven Eagell Group was recommended to me by a friend who had really positive feedback about the company. The interview process began with a phone interview, followed by two face-to-face interviews at our Milton Keynes head office.

What does a typical day look like for you? What are your day-to-day duties?

A typical day as an Apprentice Payroll Assistant at Steven Eagell Group involves tasks including processing payroll and answering any telephone or email enquiries we receive. In addition, I have a learning journal that I complete as part of my apprenticeship, so each day I spend some time keeping up to date with this and completing any outstanding sections.

How often do you attend college as part of your apprenticeship?

My apprenticeship is completely remote, meaning all of my classes and tutorials are held remotely. I have a video call once each month, however the rest of the time I’m based at our head office in Milton Keynes.

Are you able to put the things you learn at college into practice at work?

Yes, the things I’m learning as part of my apprenticeship are helping to enhance my background knowledge. At the moment, I am learning about tax and National insurance calculations, as well as the different types of pay elements. These are all a large part of my role as an Apprentice Payroll Assistant, therefore learning about them enables me to respond to any queries we receive with a far better understanding.

What are you enjoying most about your apprenticeship?

I love working in such a positive workplace! I’m also really enjoying learning new information, skills and knowledge.

What skills have you developed during your apprenticeship? Do you think these skills will help you achieve your future career goals?

The biggest skills I have developed during my apprenticeship so far are improving my attention to detail and significantly enhancing my ability to use Microsoft Excel, alongside gaining a more in-depth level of knowledge and understanding of the payroll systems we use.

The experience I’m gaining with the systems I use on a daily basis as part of my job, as well as the knowledge and understanding I have developed, will definitely help with my future career goals.

What kind of support/training do you receive at work?

My manager is really supportive and she’s always happy to answer any questions I have. She also takes the time to show me how to do things, rather than just explaining them, which has increased my confidence.

Would you recommend an apprenticeship? If so, why?

I would definitely recommend an apprenticeship. Apprenticeships provide an amazing opportunity to gain a qualification while learning as you work, developing your skills, knowledge and understanding.
