Throughout National Apprenticeship Week, we are sharing a different Q&A with a current or former Steven Eagell Group apprentice on our blog and social media, showcasing the many benefits apprenticeships offer employers and individuals. Each success story will feature participants sharing insights into their experience of completing an apprenticeship. 

Today we’re talking to Mohammed Hamza. Mohammed started as an Apprentice Technician in September 2021 and is based at our Toyota Tamworth branch. ​

Why did you apply for an apprenticeship at Steven Eagell Group?

I applied for an apprenticeship at Steven Eagell Group as they are a leading Toyota and Lexus retailer in the UK and the company is actively growing, so I thought it would be a great opportunity for me.

How did you find your apprenticeship and what did the interview process involve?

I found my apprenticeship on the GOV.UK website, after which I was contacted by the training provider and completed an online interview and assessment. Upon passing this, I had a face-to-face interview where I received a tour of our Tamworth branch. We also discussed my career goals and what it’s like working at Steven Eagell Group. Shortly after the interview, I received the news that I had been successful.

What does a typical day look like for you? What are your day-to-day duties?

At the beginning of each day I usually spend some time completing my online training. I’m then given jobs to work on and I’m assisted by my mentor who supports me and provides guidance when required. I receive a variety of jobs to help build my skills and confidence when working on our customers’ vehicles.

How often did you attend college as part of your apprenticeship?

I usually attend college once every three to eight weeks. The rest of the time I’m based at our Toyota Tamworth branch.

Are you able to put the things you learn at college into practice at work?

At college I receive in-depth training in engine and electrical diagnostics, while learning about a range of different technologies that have been developed over the years. When I receive a job that involves further diagnostics at work, I have increased knowledge of the different tests that can be carried out to identify the fault, as well as having a better understanding of the different components.

What did you enjoy most about your apprenticeship?

I’m enjoying the mixture of online and hands-on learning that comes with doing an apprenticeship. This allows me to implement my training into real-life scenarios while working on our customers’ cars.

What skills did you develop during your apprenticeship? Do you think these skills will help you achieve your future career goals?

During my apprenticeship I have developed my ability to work as part of a team alongside the other Technicians in our workshop. We all work together to diagnose faults and repair vehicles. I’ve also developed my problem-solving skills.

My apprenticeship will help me to achieve my future career goals as it has enabled me to learn about how vehicles work, which has always been a really keen interest of mine. I’ve also developed my knowledge and understanding of the motor trade in general.

What kind of support/training do you receive at work?

While at work, I’m provided with plenty of time away from my day-to-day duties to complete my online training, which helps me to further develop my skills. I am also paired up with a Master Technician who is my mentor and I work alongside him, allowing me to develop my skills and increase my knowledge of vehicles even further.

Would you recommend an apprenticeship? If so, why?

I would recommend an apprenticeship as you have the opportunity to learn and receive practical experience at the same time. Apprenticeships also enable you to gain skills for life, many of which are transferrable to other roles. It’s also great as you are getting paid to learn, while opening up a lot of opportunities and enabling you to move up the career ladder.
