We marked International Women’s Day by speaking to several of our female employees about their experiences of being a woman working at Steven Eagell Group.

International Women’s Day takes place annually on 8th March and aims to celebrate the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women, while championing women’s equality.

At Steven Eagell Group, we have been working hard for several years to address and improve the gender balance across all areas of our business. We’re incredibly proud to champion the talented women who help to drive our business forward and we remain committed to continuing to work towards improving gender equality, while celebrating our outstanding female colleagues and inspiring more women to join the automotive industry.

Our CEO Steven Eagell and Managing Director Gary Smith are both proud Silver Members of the Automotive 30% Club, a network of industry leaders who have made a commitment to building a diverse, gender-balanced business. Several of our female colleagues take part in campaigns organised by the Automotive 30% Club that are designed to highlight the automotive industry as being ‘open to all’.

We believe that attracting more female talent into our business will enhance our culture, while bringing fresh ideas and different perspectives. We employ an outstanding selection of female colleagues currently, many of whom hold senior management or leadership positions or are benefitting from our internal training and development opportunities to progress in their careers.

Read on to find out what a selection of our female colleagues have to say about their experiences of working in the automotive industry and here at Steven Eagell Group.

“I was first employed by Steven Eagell Group at our Toyota Luton site in January 2005, the first day the doors opened at the second dealership...how things have changed! Whilst the business has grown to the size it is now, I still feel that the company ethos and values have remained the same as the first day I started. This is one of the many reasons I can say I am so proud to work for Steven Eagell Group, along with the wonderful team of people around me.”

“I joined Steven Eagell Group back in 2016 whilst a student at university studying for my degree. What I loved about the business when I joined, and what has remained the same throughout my time with Steven Eagell Group, is the shared values of the business and its employees. During my time here my role has changed, and I now look after the recruitment side of the business, which I LOVE. This allows me to work closely with key stakeholders across the company, supporting them and the business in hiring the very best talent to come on our journey with us. In my role, I feel like my opinions and ideas are valued and heard. I am blown away by the trust that has been given to me and the autonomy in my role to achieve business goals in ways I see fit. I feel incredibly lucky to come to work every day and this be my job.”

“I have worked in the automotive industry since graduating from university. My first job was based at a dealership, where I enjoyed liaising with customers and seeing them drive away in their brand-new cars. In my current role at Steven Eagell Group, I’m based at our headquarters. My favourite part about working in automotive marketing is collaborating with the rest of the team to plan how we will market a new car launch, as well as seeing our plans in action. I believe the biggest misconception about the industry is that the only roles available are the ones you see when you walk into a dealership. However, so much goes on behind the scenes and there are many roles available, from marketing and accounts to customer services. In my opinion, there’s a place for everyone in the automotive industry!”

Zoe Matthews, General Manager Aftersales Operations said:

“I have worked in the motor trade, and at Steven Eagell Group for that matter, for over 20 years. I started in 2002 as weekend Receptionist and enjoyed the working environment. This piqued my interest and I soon moved to a full-time position in Aftersales. I spent most of my time looking after Accident Repair whilst supporting the Service Team with their daily customers. This also coincided with the initial growth of the business. In 2016 I became Contact Centre Manager (whilst still overseeing Accident Repair) which gave me an opportunity to learn a different skillset and it is here where my journey in managing people really began. With the consistent growth in the business, my role has again evolved. My new role as General Manager Aftersales Operations has taught me a great deal and is my most exciting challenge to date! My journey from a weekend Receptionist to General Manager Aftersales Operations has been well supported, which in turn has provided me professional growth needed to carry out my duties.”
