We are thrilled to secure a £1,800 grant for Thorndown, a Primary School in St Ives with 500 students aged 4-11 years old. The school has 18 classes from Reception to Year 6, as well as a pre-school facility.
Friends of Thorndown (FOTs), the school's fundraising committee, is helping the school boost the love of reading amongst its pupils with the creation of ‘Reading Knowledge Boxes’. These boxes will not only enhance literacy among the school’s students, but they will also help bring families closer through reading together.
The school’s goal is to develop 108 unique boxes that every child will have the chance to borrow throughout the year. Each box will include a recently published book that aligns with what the students are learning in school. Alongside this, the boxes will also include a soft blanket, fun activities that families can enjoy together (games, subject-related educational tools, watercolour sets, hot chocolate sachets, sketch pads and felt-tip pens etc). Thorndown Primary School will also include a ‘reading buddy’ in the box, a cuddly toy that encourages the children to read aloud, helping to boost their communication and language skills. The children will then share their experiences of their time with their reading buddy when they return the box to the school.
The school aims to create a vibrant reading culture that helps to empower its children and foster a lifelong enjoyment of books.
